Foundation in Compressor Technology (GCT1)

This course is aimed at operators and maintenance staff engaged in the day-to-day operation and management of gas compressors, who need a better appreciation of the machinery they work with. Highly practical in nature, it deals with the basic principles of gas compressors, specifically centrifugal, and their operations. Emphasis is placed on understanding the hardware and the compressor internals e.g. rotors, casings, impellers, bearings and seals etc. are explained in full.

This is a foundation-level course beneficial for those of you who are new entrants to the oil and gas industry, graduate engineers and more senior personnel who need insight into this technology. It is also suitable for senior process and machinery engineers engaged in the design, procurement and modification of these machines who need a better appreciation of the practical issues surrounding these machines.

The course also deals with supervisory and control systems surrounding these machines and provides an appreciation of this sophisticated technology. Real machines and case studies are used throughout to support training, with literature and materials from equipment suppliers.

Course Contents

  • Principles of gas compression
  • Different types of gas compressors and the gases handled
  • Operation characteristics of centrifugal compressors
  • Types of compressor casings, rotors, shafts, impellers and key hardware internals
  • Compressor-associated systems
  • Lube and seal systems
  • Compressor surge control systems
  • Compressor bearings, vibrations and alignments
  • Maintenance of compressors and drivers

Special Topics

  • Technologies to extend maintenance periods
  • The condition of monitoring systems - vibration, MCD, seal leakage and trending
  • Performance monitoring system and the use of internet technologies

Centrifugal Compressor Design, Operation & Maintenance (GCT2)

A unique and practical hands-on course designed for you who are experienced engineers and have a good level of understanding of centrifugal compressors. This is ideal if you want to progress to a more advanced level and develop a better appreciation of the design and operating principles of these machines.

During this course, you will learn the principles and types of gas compression processes and be given an insight into the effects of variations of gas composition, pressure and temperatures on operating characteristics.

A typical performance test analysis is presented to you with case studies from actual operating plants highlighting the practical issues associated with data collection and validation.

The principles of centrifugal compressor design, selection and optimisation are explained to you along with methods of differentiating between alternative compressors designs.

Steady state simulation technologies for performance evaluation of single and multiple compressor casings are also presented, allowing the effect of changing compositions and process conditions to be simulated.

The course will also describe selection procedures of surge control systems and recycle valve sizing, while dynamic simulations are used for a greater appreciation of compressor surge protection systems.

Case studies are presented throughout with live examples of projects.
