Gas Turbine Emissions and Environmental Issues

Gas Turbine emissions have become a major area of concern for new projects. The engine manufacturers are required to warrant emissions for nitrous oxides (NOX), sulphur oxides (SOX) and un-burnt hydrocarbons (UHC).

The operating companies have developed their own guidelines for reducing plant emissions where gas turbines are usually the largest contributor of emissions. The overall plant emissions include carbon dioxides (CO2) in addition to NOX, SOX and UHCs.

MSE gas turbine models have been developed which predict the emission levels which are then normalised for use in comparing to international standards.

MSE evaluates the engine performance, emissions and advise on the ways to mitigate the environmental issues arising from emission levels. For example, poorly performing engines also contribute higher levels of emissions above the original design levels. By ensuring that engine performance is properly maintained, the emission levels can be kept below the specified levels.
