MSE Case Study:

Satellite Integration with Existing Offshore Platform Processing Facilities

Client

Shell (McDermott Engineering)

Field/Platform

Pelican/Cormorant Alpha

Task/Objective

Devise proposal for the economic extraction of Pelican gas and oil through the existing Cormorant Alpha infrastructure

Key Results

15-year life extension for the Cormorant A asset instead of a substantial new capital investment for Pelican

Core Competencies

  • MSE’s knowledge base

  • Nomination and production forecasting

  • Integration of reservoir and facility uncertainty

  • Compression, process and turbine design

  • Dynamic and static simulation

Overview

Cormorant Alpha was a platform coming to the end of its economic life. The Pelican field is a satellite field requiring no-facilities development to be economic. MSE’s remit was to study how existing facilities could be re-configured to accept Pelican as an enabler for the project.

MSE was contracted to work on the front-end engineering phase, including:

  • Initial feasibility study

  • Development of a control philosophy and compressor system design

  • Development of a process/control dynamic simulation model

  • Development of a detailed technical specification for inclusion in a Tender Package

  • Technical support during tendering phase

  • Vendor bid analysis

  • Start-up study

MSE took a leading role in the front-end engineering phase, providing detailed technical input and guidance throughout the process. The project was faced with a major constraint with respect to available platform power to start and run any machinery. Upgrading power generation could not be supported by the project economics.

By careful attention to the process and control of the gas compression systems through utilising the dynamic simulation model, it was possible to demonstrate that the compressor could be started and operated within the constraints of the power generating system.
