CAN "DOFF" TECHNOLOGY EXTEND MATURE OIL & GAS FIELDS?

"DOFF", which stands for Digital Oil Field of the Future, is being harnessed by oil companies for production optimisation.

This is achieved by a digital Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) where the system provides a live monitor of daily production against targets, using data from a number of sources and without the need of manual intervention.

In an article published in the prestigious Oil & Gas Journal on this subject, Irani said that �A key ingredient of the digital oil field is quick, easy and timely access to quality data�.

Simonson stated �much has been written about personnel shortages, e.g. the greying workforce in oil and gas, which means more and more must come out from process and technology�. Furthermore, �data should go in once and be usable throughout the asset�s life cycle and by various applications. Customers should be freed from older enterprise software approaches that require standardisation on a single vendor just to make everything work�.

MSE Consultants Ltd, an oil and gas engineering consultancy based in Surrey, has organised a workshop in Aberdeen to explain how "DOFF" can be used for benchmarking oil and gas production facilities against industry best practices. This would allow each asset to determine, in complete confidence, how they are faring with the best practices. The seminar will show how the application of "DOFF" technology can assist in the implementation of benchmarking.

Dr Sib Akhtar, Technical Director of MSE, explains that gas compression systems are some of the more difficult equipment to analyse but their performance is the key to maintaining and extending the life of oil and gas production facilities. As fields mature, production becomes more challenging requiring greater precision in equipment design and their application. Benchmarking compressors becomes practicable within "DOFF" as this allows changing operating conditions to be made available to all equipment users and applications.

In a seminar organised for Thursday, 22nd April, from 1.30 to 5.30 pm, at the Gordon Highlanders Museum, St Luke�s, Viewfield Road, Aberdeen, AB15 7XH, MSE will present case studies on projects that they have worked on in the UK North Sea, Liverpool Bay, Middle East where optimisation of gas compression systems resulted in substantial increased production and extension of asset life.

As oil and gas fields mature, gas compressors are playing a crucial role in extending the life of oil and gas assets and maximising revenues from production facilities.

However, gas compression systems need to be adjusted or �fine tuned� for the changing process conditions to achieve maximum capacity. This is because compressors, particularly centrifugals, have a well defined operating envelope where they operate efficiently; when pushed beyond their normal operating envelope they suffer from a range of operational issues. The age of equipment and changing field conditions can adversely affect their performance i.e. pressure rise and flow capacity.

So what can operators do to optimise their compressor performance and achieve the best return from their investment?

� Establish the true field performance of the machines

� Determine whether the machine performance is affected by changing operating conditions

� Establish the most cost effective way to improve compressor pressure rise performance and capacity

Working closely with operating companies, MSE (Consultants) Ltd, an independent engineering consultancy with no association to manufacturers or service companies, has developed a range of software applications, engineering tools and methodologies to determine answers to the above questions. These tools have been extensively used to optimise the current performance of the oil and gas assets, undertake concept design studies and develop procurement specifications. Selecting The Right Compressor Training Course for your Needs

If you are considering investing time and money in a compressor training course, a search on the internet will offer you many options, but which course will be right for you?

The following guidance may help you to evaluate the courses and select the most appropriate compressor course to suit your needs.

Specialist Courses

There are specialist courses offered by manufacturers of compressors and suppliers of associated control systems. These courses will teach you compressor operations and maintenance related issues. There are other courses that offer training on compressor surge control systems. So if your aim is to learn surge control systems you should attend these courses. There are other courses that offer condition and performance monitoring and you will receive training on condition and performance related issues. Understanding the Compressor Operation

A Compressor is similar to the human heart, except it is the heart of a process plant; without the compressor the plant will neither start nor operate. You need to understand the relationship between the process requirements and compressor design characteristics. For example, what pressure rise is required? what is the range of flow the compressor must deliver? what is the temperature rise and power consumption? All these are important matters which you will be confronted with in a real operating plant.
