Unlock Your Gas Compression Systems

MSE to launch new JIP initiative

The new JIP will build upon the knowledge and experiences gained from earlier investigations and pioneer the development of new technologies to evaluate the following:

  • Improved methods for increasing compressor capacities by monitoring and reducing internal leakages of compressors

  • Accurate modelling of internal flows and verifications by measurements

  • Development of model-based systems for on-line monitoring the compressor performance and optimising flow capacities

  • Refinement of diagnostic tools for identifying causes of performance losses and the remedies

By developing these technologies the new JIP will have the capability to:

  • Increase revenue and availability

  • Extend asset life by avoiding premature well abandonment due to shortfalls in compression performance

  • Raise production capacity by up to 30%

  • Gain further critical insight into running and maintaining machines more efficiently

  • Remove the guesswork of short and long term machine performance

In 2002 MSE Consultants launched a JIP that evaluated the performance of more than 60 gas compressors operating in offshore fields. Many crucial operational issues were highlighted and the knowledge was shared with the JIP partners culminating in the development of design guidelines for new compressors.

This JIP also created the first and largest database of its kind comprising the design and operational characteristics of more than 60 machines from many different manufacturers and applications.

The findings of this JIP concluded that:

  • Compressor performance shortfalls of 15-35% are common

  • The vast majority of machines fail to meet the original design specifications

  • There is a reduction in throughput capacities as well as an increase in power consumption
